Te Wāhi Toi/The Arts Place exists to connect the creative community of Queenstown and Wānaka with audiences, students, teachers, spaces and each other. We are a not-for-profit organisation powered by Three Lakes Cultural Trust and inspired by local arts and culture.
Superpartner is pleased to announce “Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz”, a project by Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland-based artist Sonya Lacey. Lacey will present an installation within the historic 1860s woolshed at Peregrine Winery in Gibbston Valley. The exhibition will be open to view daily, 11am - 4pm, until 14 September.
The installation features a combination of moving-image works and sculptural forms executed in cast iron with nuanced interventions of copper and zinc.
Extending Lacey's investigation into overlaps between work and somatic chemistry. Her new sculpture – suggestive of a bed or mattress form – emerges from a cast iron matrix intermittently accented by heat-fused traces of copper and zinc. These material juxtapositions, the result of an experimental casting process, gesture toward the interactions in which the trace metals – such as, zinc, copper, magnesium, iron and others – act on sleep-induction generally, as well as with hypnotic medications.
Sited within a woolshed, distinguished by its materiality – schist and rimu timbers layered with rusted corrugated roofing that attests to its 1860s origins as a place of labour, the venue contributes a tangible sense of historical and material transformation, inviting a critical reappraisal of the fragile boundaries between industry, cultural memory, and somatic experience.
