Kym Beaton Art

My passion for painting lies in capturing the inner emotions of my subjects through soft pastels. With a focus on portraits, coastlines and New Zealand's South Island mountains and lake landscapes, I explore the beauty of the world we live in and the emotions that define us as human beings.

In 2019, I had the privilege of being filmed for a television production 'Put Some Colour in Your Life', and painted the host Graeme Stevenson's portrait. This 30 minute episode highlights my unique approach to painting and the inspiration that drives me to create. Take a look at the episode below.

I'm a Plein air enthusiast often outdoors with pastels and easel. I enjoy the challenge of interpreting the landscape and capturing my response to fleeting passages of light. My studio work focusses on large colour laden works with distinctive mark making that create texture and drama.

I'm an art educator and love to pass on the tips and tricks that I've learnt along the way in my own art journey. Working with the Three Lakes Cultural Trust 'Art In Schools' project I've worked with primary aged students across Queenstown, Wānaka and Hawea inspiring them to create exhibition artworks.
