Steve Solomon | Contemporary Māori Installation Artist | Cultural Design Consultant

As a contemporary Māori installation artist, my work aims to harmonise the deep-rooted traditions of Māori culture with the freshness of modern design elements. My artistic journey began with traditional Māori wood carving, and since then, I've broadened my artistic language. By utilising a variety of modern materials and techniques, I craft captivating installations that enhance public and commercial spaces.

Each installation is more than an art piece—it's a living narrative, each unfolding within its unique environment. Whether it's the vast openness of a park, the warm ambiance of a hotel lobby, the educational atmosphere of a school, or the bustling energy of a city street, the installations are designed to harmonise with and enhance their surroundings.

The creation of each installation involves careful planning and collaboration. I invest time in understanding the distinctive characteristics of each site and the specific needs of the client, weaving elements that honour the area's cultural heritage and align with the client's vision or narrative.

With the use of modern mediums and materials, I reinterpret traditional motifs and designs, creating works that bridge the gap between the ancestral Māori world and contemporary society. This fusion of old and new introduces a dynamic and evocative dimension to the spaces they inhabit, infusing them with a sense of history, culture, and modern relevance.
