It’s been a few months since the doors first swung open at The Green in Luggate, but Artē Collective has already cemented itself as a vital heartbeat in the Upper Clutha creative scene. This contemporary, artist-led gallery isn't just a place to hang pictures; it’s a living workspace where the distance between the creator and the collector disappears.

We caught up with the collective to see how they’ve settled into their rural-chic home and what makes this "artist-led" model so special.

From "Luggarte" with Love

The name "Artē" is a playful, tongue-in-cheek nod to the local nickname for their home - "Luggarte". This blend of artistic integrity and approachable humor perfectly captures the vibe of the space.

The journey to Luggate was years in the making. Founding member Andi Regan had been searching for the perfect location to bring a collective closer to home after 15 years as part of a successful group in Cromwell. When the opportunity arose at The Green, Andi connected with five other artists she admired, and Artē was born.

"Wānaka's high commercial rents made an artist-led initiative financially unfeasible," says Andi. "When we heard The Green was being developed, we saw an opportunity. We were even invited to play a role in the design of the building to suit our creative needs".

Six Artists, One Vision

What makes the gallery feel so cohesive is how the different mediums "sit in conversation" with one another. On any given day, you might see a flock of sculptural birds resting near a Central Otago landscape, or a vibrant oil-painted fox glancing toward a ceramic hare.

The collective features a diverse range of disciplines: 

• Sue Rutherford: Ceramics inspired by the tactile beauty of natural forms.
• Jenny Chisholm: Vivid landscapes capturing the shifting moods of Central Otago
• Andi Regan: Biomorphic sculptural works created from re-purposed industrial materials.
• Lizzie Carruthers: Expressive animal portraits full of personality and charm.
• Briar Hardy-Hesson: Bold, colorful works bridging jewelry, craft, and design.
• Sophie Melville: Abstract watercolours offering layered, emotive reflection.

Breaking the "Traditional" Gallery Mold

Unlike traditional galleries, Artē is entirely run by the artists themselves. They share every responsibility, from staffing the floor to the day-to-day operations. For the visitor, this means you aren't just talking to a salesperson—you're talking to the maker.

"We want people to feel completely comfortable, whether they're seasoned collectors or just curious," says Andi. "'Just looking' is always welcome. Our aim is to inspire and invite".

What’s Next for Luggate’s Art Hub?

While they are now firmly established at The Green, the collective's vision continues to grow. Looking ahead, they hope to host guest artist exhibitions, support residencies, and eventually move their shows into the wider community through sculpture walks and outdoor art.

The goal is clear: to build recognition for Luggate as a premier "arty destination". With easy parking, great coffee nearby, and a world-class selection of local art, they are well on their way.
