21 April: Mamehe Movement - Rooted Storytelling & Pacific Dance

In this session, participants will explore the joy of movement through a gentle and inclusive introduction to Polynesian-inspired choreography and storytelling. We will learn how rhythmic gestures and Pacific stories can help us reconnect with our heritage and the land we stand on. This workshop is designed for all generations and abilities, focusing on a "Mamehe" concept, i.e. the belief that the resources for our wellbeing are already within us. No previous dance experience is required; we simply invite you to move with us and discover how collective dance can support a healthier, more connected way of living.

About the facilitator: We are a Tāhuna-based family collective with deep roots in Tonga, Hawaiʻi, and Tuvalu, and a shared passion for the arts of the Pacific. Our background spans a variety of movement practices, from traditional Polynesian dance and performance to contemporary physical training and music creation. Together, we developed the Mamehe Movement to bridge ancestral wisdom with modern wellbeing. We believe that dance belongs to everyone, and we are dedicated to creating a space where all generations can come together to move, share stories, and strengthen the mana of our community.

About Community Craft: Community Craft is a free, drop-in night for exploring all kinds of artistic craft - from writing and dancing to sewing and beyond. Whether you're trying something new or continuing a creative practice, this is a relaxed, welcoming space to connect and make alongside others. Open to all levels and ages. All welcome – bring a friend! No RSVP required.

Thank you to Central Lakes Trust for bringing creativity to our community.
