Marti Friedlander | Southern Rural

Starkwhite is delighted to announce a limited edition fine art print of Marti Friedlander's celebrated photograph, Eglinton Valley, 1970.

Alongside the Eglinton Valley print, Starkwhite Queenstown be showing a selection of Marti Friedlander's original silver gelatin photographs featuring rural life in the South and Stewart Islands.

To celebrate the release of Eglinton Valley, contributions from high country farmer and poet Jim Morris and a new poem by Queenstown poet Bethany Rogers will be read at the launch event.

Marti Friedlander (1928-2016) had an almost sixty year career in New Zealand, arriving from England in early 1958 and taking photographs until shortly before her death. From the early 1960s she became one of the best-known and most celebrated photographers in Aotearoa New Zealand; her work reproduced in periodicals and books and exhibited widely, especially after the Auckland Art Gallery retrospective in 2001, which toured nationally.  In 2011 Marti received an Icon Award from the Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi, which acknowledges lifetime achievement and is limited to a living circle of 20 artists.

Last year 1964 Mountain Culture journal featured Marti's work on the cover and wrote an extensive article about her life and photographs of the rural and the remote. Read it here: https://1964.co.nz/marti-friedlander-rural-photography/

Starkwhite Queenstown is open Tuesday–Saturday, 11am–5pm.
